Another Good Year

2016 was another good year for me on RedBubble. I had a total of 93 images receive a combined total of 228 features. So I thought I'd take the time today to post my five most featured images on RedBubble in 2016.

My most featured image in 2016 on RedBubble with fourteen features was this image of the iconic Canadian tour boat, Maid of the Mist, at the base of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.

My second most featured image with eight features was a digital painting of Indian Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada.

My third most featured image with seven features was a digital painting created from original photo taken at the Ammonoosuc River in Littleton, New Hampshire, USA.

Coming in at fourth place with seven features is this digital painting of Autumn along Lake Ontario at Glenora, Prince Edward County, Ontario

Fifth place actually has a tie as both images also have seven features each. The first is a digital painting created from an original photo taken looking west along Ste Catherine street at McGill College avenue – Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The final entry here is an image of a miniature rose photographed at the Montreal Botanical Gardens, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. If Yellow means Friendship, and Red means Love, a red tinged yellow rose must mean ‘More than Friends’.

From Photo to Photo Art

Back in 2009, I wrote a post about Photo art. I explained that my interest in Photo Art grew out of my trying to create images for use on note cards that looked more like paintings than photographs. And now some seven years later, my interest in Photo Art is still going strong. What started out as means to creating note cards I printed myself has grown into creating images that can be placed on numerous products and sold on several POD sites. (POD stands for Print on Demand)

As there may be some who don't readily understand the term 'Photo Art', I again offer the definition I wrote back in 2009 -- This was originally written by Danny Raphael on the RetouchPro forums. He wrote, [Photo Art is] "Art that is created using computer software in which a photo image is used as a basis or reference."

To achieve my photo Art, I use a number of software: Photoshop, Dynamic Auto Painter, Corel Painter Essentials, Topaz Simplify & Impressions and ON1 Perfect Effects. Sometimes just one, other times several are used to achieve the final output. My goal is to turn a photo into something that looks as if it could have been painted instead of photographed.

My most recent creation started out as a simple photograph of tulips growing in a neighbour's garden. Entitled "Aglow", this image is available for sale on my RedBubble site.

Taking that image into Photoshop, I remove the background and crop the image so I am left with just the white tulips and about half the green stems and leaves. Continuing to play with the image, I add smart blur to simplify the structures, and glowing edges which in turn are inversed and desaturated to create pencil lines.

The image is then saved out from Photoshop and opened in Dynamic Auto Painter (DAP). In DAP, using the Azo AOP (template), a watercolour version is created. Add a watercolour paper texture and saved. This saved digital painting is then brought back into Photoshop to have a light creme coloured background added.

Some additional tweaks in Photoshop to vibrance and contrast and the image is now complete. This digital watercolour, entitled "Spring's beauties", can be found on my Society 6 site.

Top Five Featured images on Red Bubble in 2015

It has been an eternity since I last posted a blog entry. April 19, 2015 to be precise. So I guess I am way over due.

2015 was another good year for me on Red Bubble. I had a total of 130 images receive a combined total of 284 features. So I thought I'd take the time today to post my five most featured images on RedBubble in 2015.

My most featured image in 2015 on Red Bubble with nine features was this image of Black-capped Chickadee photographed at the Lynde Shore Conservation Area, Whitby, Ontario.

My second most featured image with eight features was one of a Tiger Longwing butterfly (Heliconius hecale) photographed at the Montreal Botanical Gardens in Montreal, Quebec.

Coming in at third place with seven features is this image of a Golden Birdwing butterfly (Troides rhadamantus) photographed at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory in Cambridge, Ontario.

Licensing update 10 April 2015

I continue to upload new images to PicFair and continue to be rewarded with Stars.

As explained in an earlier blog post, there appears to be some sort of moderation because you may receive an email stating that some of "your pics have been starred, because we really, really like them. Well done!" You don't need to remove those images that were not starred, but they do affect the number of images that you can upload. (It appears that you can upload more images if most or all your images receive the star as opposed to the number of images you can upload if none of your images are starred.)

The above photo was taken back in July 2007 using a Panasonic DMC-FZ30 ultra-zoom point and shot camera. It was one of those "being in the right place at the right time" moments. The sun had already set behind Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel and turned the sky to oranges and golds.

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel (Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours means 'Our Lady of Good Help') is a church in the district of Old Montreal in Montreal, Quebec. One of the oldest churches in Montreal, it was built in 1771 over the ruins of an earlier chapel.

Yet another Licensing update

Three weeks ago, I posted a second blog post talking about my entry into the world of image licensing. (See post dated 13 March 2015.) I mentioned in that post how I noticed a flurry of activity on one particular image very recently.

This was one of the first images I uploaded to the site. While the images I uploaded at the same time had on average eight views, the number of views this image had received had jumped to 46 in under two days! I had no idea why?
So it was a very pleasant surprise when I learned that an anonymous buyer licensed this image on 31 March 2015.

I wish to thank the buyer for licensing the image. As well as everyone who took the time to look at the image making it my most viewed image on PicFair.

Nova Scotia

The beauty of Nova Scotia

I have been lucky to visit Nova Scotia on five separate trips. And I've taken a photograph or three while there. Today, I thought I share a few (a very few) of those image.

Along the north shore on the Bay of Fundy you will find Margaretsville, a small community (population: 202) in Annapolis County

Continue along Nova Scotia's Trunk 3 as it hugs the south shore past Saint Margaret's Bay until you reach Upper Tantallon and then turn right and head to Indian Harbour. Indian Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada

Continue eastward along the shore road and you arrive at Peggy's Cove, home of the World famous Peggy's Cove Lighthouse originally built in 1868. Attempt at licensing update

About a month ago, I posted a blog post talking about my first entry into the world of image licensing. (See post dated 14 February 2015)

In the past month since joining PicFair, I've uploaded 53 images to the site. As I mentioned on my previous post, if the site's moderators really like your image, they award it a Star. You don't need to remove those images that were not starred, but they do affect the number of images that you can upload. So I decided to delete any image I upload that does not receive that coveted Star. This has resulted in the deletion of 21 images, leaving as of today (13 March 2015) 32 images on my PicFair page. Have not yet made my first Million doing this. In fact, haven't even made my first penny, but one must try. (Smile)

I did notice a flurry of activity on one particular image very recently.
