The beauty of Nova Scotia

I have been lucky to visit Nova Scotia on five separate trips. And I've taken a photograph or three while there. Today, I thought I share a few (a very few) of those image.

Along the north shore on the Bay of Fundy you will find Margaretsville, a small community (population: 202) in Annapolis County

Continuing west along the Bay of Fundy shore and you'll come to Digby. A pretty town with an active harbour filled with fishing boats. And home to the best scallops you'll ever taste! Digby Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada

Cross the peninsular to Liverpool, then head east to Bridgewater. Then hang a right and head towards Lunenburg. Blue Rocks is about 6 minutes east (seaward) of Lunenburg. A quaint fishing village that has become very popular with artists and photographers. Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia, Canada

Continue along Nova Scotia's Trunk 3 as it hugs the south shore past Saint Margaret's Bay until you reach Upper Tantallon and then turn right and head to Indian Harbour. Indian Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada

Continue eastward along the shore road and you arrive at Peggy's Cove, home of the World famous Peggy's Cove Lighthouse originally built in 1868. Shoal Tower

Shoal Tower is a Martello tower located in the harbour (Confederation Basin) of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, directly opposite Kingston City Hall. It is one of four such towers built in the 1840s to protect Kingston’s harbour and the entrance to the Rideau Canal

Built in 1847, this limestone tower is 11 m high and 16.5 m in diameter. The guns of Shoal Tower defended the approaches of Kingston Harbour. A dispute between Great Britain and the United States over the boundary between British Columbia and Oregon that threatened to lead to war and to the invasion of Canada (see Oregon crisis) prompted their construction. Eventually Shoal Tower was abandoned.

It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1930, and is part of the Kingston Fortifications National Historic Site

Top Five Featured images on Red Bubble in 2013

It has been an eternity since I last posted a blog entry. March 13, 2013 to be precise. So I guess I am way over due.

2013 was an amazing year for me on Red Bubble. I had a total of 239 images receive a combined total of 502 features. So I thought I'd take the time today to post my five most featured images on RedBubble in 2013.

My most featured image in 2013 on Red Bubble (in fact my most featured image ever) on Red Bubble received eleven features was this image of the HMCS Kingston when it came to visit Kingston, Ontario.

My second most featured image with ten features was one of a Great Mormon Butterfly photographed at the Montreal Botanical Gardens located in Montreal Quebec.

Coming in at third place with nine features is this image of sunflowers taken in downtown Kingston, Ontario during a sidewalk sale.

In fourth place, also with nine features, is this image taken of a soybean field along County route 2 in Napanee, Ontario.

My fifth most featured image in 2013 on Red Bubble with eight features is this White Morpho butterfly. This image was also taken at the Montreal Botanical Gardens.


I know I said my top five, but there was another image that also had eight features on Red Bubble in 2013. And that would be this image of the old Washburn Mill (currently Doner Studio at the Mill) and Lower Brewers Locks on the Cataraqui river in Kingston, Ontario.

Photo Art Update

According to that Label thingie on the right, this will my twelfth blog post where I mention Photo Art. Something I've not written about since May of this year. Admittedly, I do tend to get a bit lax (cough) in posting to this blog. It appears that I've been just as lax in updating the Photo Art gallery on my Smugmug site.

Montreal's Exterior staircases

One of the unique features of Montreal architecture and often commented on by visitors to the city is the abundance of exterior staircases.

It is difficult to find the exact reasons why this architectural feature is so prevalent, but two reasons do get mentioned most often.

One reason often cited is cost savings. You don't heat exterior stair cases thus save money.

But the reason most often cited and actually given by the City of Montreal on one of their websites is that this all started because of a by-law trying to improve the city's green space.

Back in the 19th century (Think I read somewhere it was 1840) Montreal passed a by-law requiring all new buildings to be so many feet back from the sidewalk. This meant smaller buildings on the lot, so to compensate and maximize the living space in the building, staircases were placed outside over the required green space.

Another oft asked question is why are the staircases open? Obviously only asked by people who have never spent a winter in Montreal. With an average annual snowfall of 210 cm (86 inches) the open thread makes snow removal a bit easier.

New Product at RedBubble

Last week RedBubble announced a new product -- iPhone 4 cases

Within the first 24 hours, 2400 plus case designs were uploaded by RedBubble members. As of today, some 4 days later, there are almost 10,000 designs offered for sale on the site. Not sure if there's yet to be a single sale, but the membership is certainly prepared should there be a rush on iPhone 4 cases .

And in case there is, I uploaded a few designs of my own. Below are nine (9) designs for your viewing pleasure.
